BIO: First Aid Kit

First Aid Kit are a Swedish duo comprised of sisters Johanna and Klara Söderberg, whose vocal harmonies and woodsy, folk-influenced songwriting take influence from the likes of Fleet Foxes and Joanna Newsom. Hailing from suburban Enskede, the siblings began composing songs as young teenagers in 2007. The home-recorded "Tangerine" enjoyed airplay on Swedish radio later that summer, and the debut EP Drunken Trees helped expand the girls' audience upon its release in April 2008. The London-based Wichita Records reissued Drunken Trees one year later, bolstering its track list with a reverent Fleet Foxes cover and three additional songs performed live in a Swedish forest. The duo then set to work on a full-length album, balancing schoolwork with the recording sessions. The Big Black & the Blue was released in 2010, followed by Lion's Roar in early 2012

In 2008, Tiller's Folly introduced a multimedia component to their show including both modern and archival film footage and photography, adding sharp, captivating visual images and film designed to provide a whole new depth of understanding and enjoyment to an already impressive stage show. As a result, this is a show that the audience will carry with them long after the final note has played.

Fueled by their unfailing passion and enthusiasm for the music, Tiller’s is continuingly experimenting with different phrasing, tones and textures while recording with some of the most exciting and innovative musicians and singers in the business today as they continue to evolve as artists. Names like the phenomenally talented front man of the iconic group NewGrass Revival, John Cowan to Bob Babbitt (most famous for his work as a member of Motown Records studio band, the Funk Brothers, from 1966–1972, as well as his tenure as part of MFSB for Philadelphia International Records) and the late legendary session keyboardist Larry Knechtel have moved Tiller’s music to a new level of mastery.

Now, in early 2011 they are hard at work again on a new project that marks a fresh, new beginning for the band. In addition to current members Bruce Coughlan, Nolan Murray and Laurence Knight they will again showcase the vocals prowess of the masterful John Cowan, as well as introducing new musical collaborators like Josh Shilling (Mountain Heart) and Cia Cherryholmes (The Cherryholmes) along with the legendary Scottish Music Hall of Famer Phil Cunningham on accordion. Rounding out the musical guests on the album will be guitarist Jeff Autry (John Cowan Band) and banjo great Scott Vestal (John Cowan Band/Sam Bush Band).

BIO: Chris McLeod

Chris McLeod, is an emerging singer/songwriter from Nashville, TN. He has received song placement on MTV, and has played hundreds of live shows in his career including numerous independently booked US tours. His songs are beautifully crafted with infectious melodies and inspired lyrics. Chris was a staple in the music scene in Tulsa, OK for ten years.

His most recent album, Traveler, was recorded with producer Joshua Silverberg (Edison Glass, Illuminate, Addison Road, Toby Mac, Seabird) out of Nashville, TN. Traveler is Chris’ third studio album.

Chris has also lead Christian communities in worship for many years. With a blend of original songs, hymn arrangements, and modern worship songs, Chris leads in an honest and inspiring way. He also knows that worship is more than a few songs on a Sunday morning, it is a holistic encounter that should take hold of every part of our lives. Whether intended for congregational singing or personal listening, every song Chris writes is intended to exemplify a life of worship.

Tyler James' debut full-length record It Took the Fire will be released March 2 on Son of Geert Records. For the 27-year-old Nashville songsmith, it's a coming of age album. "I'm part of a restless generation known more for its apathy than for its voice," he says. "My songs are about the struggle to find my own truth." With his heartfelt approach and raspy croon, James sounds like an old soul. Citing influences from Paul Simon to Rainer Maria Rilke, he has a reverence for past masters that does him good. With meticulously crafted arrangements disguised as simple pop tunes, It Took the Fire is one part classic 70s, another part Memphis soul.

Co-produced with acclaimed producer Neilson Hubbard (Glen Phillips, Garrison Starr), It Took the Fire was tracked in four days at Nashville's legendary House of David Studios. "Like a lot of studios on Music Row, you often feel like you're standing on hallowed ground," James says. "I used Elvis' piano on the record and the studio still has a trap door entrance from when he tracked there." Highlights on the record include the title track, which rings out like an old spiritual when he sings: "It took the fire to save my soul/ It took the fire to change me/ Glory shown in the ashes blowin' away." Other songs range from heartbreak on the slow jam "All I Got," to coping with the death of a friend on the Randy Newman-esque "A Sailor's Tune."

Born in the Pacific Northwest, but raised in small-town Iowa, James has often been an outsider. "It was pretty much a few street lights and baseball diamonds surrounded by cornfields," he says. "I'm a Midwest kid at heart, but when you're young you don't see the value in it. Luckily I found a Dylan tape in my sister's pick-up truck one day and it changed everything." Once out of high school, James moved to Nashville and quickly found a home in the music community. "The talent here is overwhelming," he laughs. "I had the green knocked out of me pretty quick." James honed his craft while earning a college degree and eventually debuted in 2005 with the aptly titled An EP. Produced by Jason Lehning (Alison Krause, Guster), the release was met with critical acclaim, with Paste Magazine saying, "His vulnerable lyrics, uncontrived vocals and memorable piano and guitar arrangements make for a sound as accessible as it is meaningful."

James' songs have found their way onto television shows like ABC's "Brothers and Sisters" and MTV's "The Hills." Additionally, his song "Call My Name" (a collaborative effort with DJ Morgan Page) reached number 5 on Billboard's worldwide dance charts last year. James has spent the last four years traveling the country in his old VW, playing with the likes of Ben Lee, Mat Kearney, Diane Birch, Bobby Bare Jr., Denison Witmer and The Autumn Defense. "I can't tell you how many strange couches I slept on," says James. "I don't do much planning ahead in the hope of finding the back alleys." That approach would sometimes backfire on him. "I'd end up freezing my butt off in the back seat at some dark truck stop in the middle of nowhere," he says. More recently James was one of the founding members of Ten Out of Tennessee, an acclaimed Nashville artist collective whose tours aim to prove there's more to Music City than rhinestones and cowboy boots.

With the release of It Took the Fire, James seeks beauty in the mystic and purpose in the disillusion that has defined his generation. "I wanted my record to reflect the community we have in Nashville," he says. "I still have hope that there are people out there who get together with friends, open up a bottle of wine and listen to records."

About: Afterlife Parade

Singer/songwriter Quinn Erwin was at a crossroads. Having recently relocated to Nashville, he found himself surrounded by a series of losses in his own life and in the lives of those close to him. Compelled by a desire to comfort the mourning, Erwin suddenly found himself embarking on a new direction musically – one inspired by the notion that death is a homecoming, rather than a reason for grief.

“I couldn't recall if I had ever heard any songs about death that were triumphant and celebratory,” he explains. “So I made it my mission to write one.”

That initial inspiration became a verse. The verse became a song. The song would eventually take Erwin in an unexpected direction entirely, launching the creation of a band.

Afterlife Parade was born.

As a solo artist, Quinn Erwin has been writing and performing for the past 12 years. He released his first EP A New Day in January 2009 followed by the full length A Million Miles Away in May 2010. Most recently, he was the Grand Prize Winner of the 2010 Jansport Battle of the Bands and played at The Forecastle Festival in Louisville, KY alongside The Flaming Lips, The Smashing Pumpkins, Spoon, and She & Him. He was also named IMVU Artist of the Month in August 2010.

Released on January 31, 2011 and produced by Jeremy McCoy (bass player for The Fray), Afterlife Parade’s debut EP Death is the first in a two-part concept album of sorts. The songs focus on fate, the end of the world, the death of an ideal, and the comfort from the dying to the loved ones they leave behind. The companion EP Rebirth is due to be released in April 2011.

“Death, as an EP, is deep, dark and atmospheric,” Erwin says. “Rebirth is the exact opposite – it’s upbeat, percussive and a bit electronic.”

A fitting metaphor for an artist with many dimensions himself.

The band was formed in 1998 by Steve Gulley, Barry Abernathy, and Jim Van Cleve. Johnny Dowdle was the original bass player. For a short period, Steffey left the band. During that period, Steffey was replaced by mandolinist Alan Perdue. After their debut album, Dowdle left the group, and was replaced by former James King bass player Jason Moore. After Steffey's return to the group, Mountain Heart added virtuoso guitarist Clay Jones to the lineup. In December 2006, the band announced that Steve Gulley would be leaving the group. On January 5, 2007, Josh Shilling debuted with the band at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, TN, and was announced as the group's new lead singer. The group received and astounding standing ovation on the famous Opry stage after Shilling sang one of his original songs. In September of that year, Jones was replaced by Grammy Award winning guitarist, Clay Hess. In December 2007, mandolinist Aaron Ramsey replaced Steffey, making his debut in Shilling fashion on the stage of The Grand Ole Opry. Clay Jones returned replacing Hess in January 2009, joining the band again at the Ark in Ann Arbor, the site of their 2007 (live) recording. Mountain Heart had been with the Skaggs Family Records label since 2002, but signed with Rural Rhythm Records out of Los Angeles, CA for a single record deal. They released their first live recording, entitled Road That Never Ends. This album has been critically acclaimed and highly sought after. A music video for Road That Never Ends was produced by Josh Shilling and landed the group a spot in heavy rotation on GAC and CMT.

Since 2007, Mountain Heart has been on tour with acts such as Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Punch Brothers, Marshall Tucker, Travis Tritt, Levon Helm, John Fogerty, Tony Rice, and many many more. After playing the Grand Ole Opry over 125 times, winning dozens of awards and legions of fans across the country, and assembling what is considered one of the strongest groups of musicians in acoustic music or any genre, in 2010, Mountain Heart decided to open their own record label. MH Music Group was born and their first ever self-produced/released project "That Just Happened" hit store shelves in the Fall of 2010. The album, which features guests like New Grass Revival front man & current Doobie Brother bassist John Cowan, legendary session drummer Eddie Bayers and guitar whiz Bryan Sutton received high praise from critics, even scoring a prestigious Four Star rating from Country Weekly Magazine.

In January 2012 the band welcomed into the group Seth Taylor, an eighteen year old guitar prodigy who has won numerous awards and shared the stage with the likes of Charlie Daniels and his mentor, Brad Paisley. In his second week with the band Seth got to share the stage two nights in a row with one of his guitar heroes, Tony Rice when Mountain Heart shared back to back dates with him in Georgia.

Mountain Heart has grown from a traditional bluegrass into a group that critics describe as "acoustic overdrive" and simply can't say enough about. Hints of rock, jazz, blues, bluegrass, country, and even classical music appears on stage every night these days. Mountain Heart is continuing to pave the way for musicians and music lovers across the world.

Cody Blackbird is a traditional Native American Flutist who is Eastern Band Cherokee and Dakota. To date, he has released four full length albums and performed with the likes of Grammy award winners Joanne Shenandoah, Bill Miller, Rock and Roll Hall Of Famer Nokie Edwards of the Ventures and others. For his third album, The Journey, Cody was named Flutist of the Year by the Native American Music Awards. He is the youngest ever recipient of this prestigious award. Cody has been playing the flute and practicing traditional singing since the age of eight. Music runs in the Blackbird family; Cody's father is also a renowned American Indian poet and songwriter

Cody has lived in many different places across the U.S. including Ohio, Idaho, South Dakota and Alaska, which has allowed him to experience varying cultures and traditions. He was brought up with and still follows the Dakota way of life and maintains a traditional lifestyle. Cody tours on a full-time basis and also works with youth across the country as a motivational speaker tackling subjects like substance abuse, suicide prevention, and goal-setting. BIO: Colleen Lloy

Born into a musical family, the natural progression was for me to begin experimenting with my voice and guitar through the church choir at the age of 10. By age 14, my career began professionally. My first recording became the number 2 song on an album for the charity, “MADD” (Mothers Against Drunk Drivers). This recording brought attention to City Kidd’s manager who asked me to join. City Kidd evolved into the band now known as Tesla. I forged onto a separate path which led to a radio tour in Australia.

Moving to Nashville helped me hone my skills as a writer. I write with passion, about life’s experiences. 2000 was a difficult year for me when I lost my brother. After losing him, I wrote the song titled, “Can You Hear”. On Stella Parton’s suggestion, the song was released to Christian Country Music Radio and charted number 26. I have always been a strong supporter of the US Military. When my son joined the Army, I wrote You’re Gonna Fly” and made the song available to anyone and everyone related to someone in the military to thank them for their unselfish service to our great Nation. When my son deployed to Afghanistan, the song “Missing You” was born. I recently returned from an awesome USO Tour in Italy and am planning on returning to Italy in 2012 to visit our troops.

Performing throughout the U.S. and abroad has resulted in entering and winning multiple singing and songwriting competitions. I am a frequent guest at the nationally known Bluebird Café, and have done television and radio broadcasts. I have opened up for artists like Billy Dean, Paul Overstreet, John Berry, Lee Greenwood, George Jones, Mel McDaniels, Billy Ray Cyrus, Tanya Tucker to name a few. I have had the rare privilege to interview Mr. BB King and film his live performances over the last year. I am a frequent guest at BB Kings in Nashville. I have played large arenas, small stages, no stages and backyard patios. You can count on the fact I will give you all I have with each performance no matter what venue I choose.

BIO: Reno Ka

Reno Ka was born on August 20th 1988.

She is a singer- songwriter, known for her eclectic mix of various musical genres including house, R&B and soul.

Reno took part in piano concerts at the age of seven, and started her first studio productions only five years later. Her passion for music was discovered during her school days, and her work as a singer in the school band. Reno is currently working on her own music productions, with various music producers, DJs and music labels around the world, such as Terrence Parker, John Julius Knight, Enzo Siffredi, Philipp van het Veld, Jamez Et Soulboy, NB Records, Interlabel, and the UK based label Crossworld Records.

After initial productions, she was working on a remake for the US singer Rachel Wallace, in 2010 which will appear on Tom Novy's label 'Interlabel'.

At the age of fifteen, she was booked for several shows, and so she became a performing artist on different events and clubs, such as Pacha for example.

Since then, she has been performing in Austria, Germany, Spain, Croatia and Switzerland.

BIO: Patrick Joseph

Patrick Joseph is a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist hailing from the city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Joseph got his start in music performing in and out of various bands in the Pittsburgh area and collaborating with different songwriters before finally finding his own path as a solo artist at the age of twenty-one, playing acoustic gigs in and around the Pittsburgh region while writing and recording demos of his original material.

With the help of social networking sites such as Myspace and Facebook, Patrick Joseph’s self-recorded demos circulated the internet, receiving positive reviews and gaining a steady internet fan-base which inspired him to release a compilation of these demos in 2007 entitled The Basement Tapes EP. The Basement Tapes EP was distributed through indie music site CDBaby.com where it received top-ratings from fans and is now sold out and out-of-print. “I never intended on putting those songs out there as prematurely as I did,” he explains, “But it just seemed like the right thing to do at the time. Those songs were all just sketches of my early moments as a songwriter, the first steps of exploration.”

After nearly two years of playing shows and writing in the Pittsburgh region, Joseph decided it was time for new horizons. “There’s a certain ceiling you feel that you hit in the smaller cities,” he explains. “Even if you don’t actually hit the ceiling full-on, you can see it and become aware of it and it makes you anxious, nervous, a little antsy. I saw the ceiling of Pittsburgh from below and thought maybe I should plant my roots someplace a little bigger, a little brighter.” Taking his own advice, in the fall of 2008 he replanted himself across the country in Los Angeles, California and currently resides in the neighborhood of Los Feliz.

During August of 2009, Patrick Joseph’s song “Arsonist Blues” was featured in an online contest at indie music website musicnation.com. Sponsored by Spin Magazine, Hennessy, Epic Records and Gibson Guitars, the contest was based on fan voting and boasted a recording contract as top prize. Amongst two-thousand entries, “Arsonist Blues” won first prize in the fan head-to-head competition, receiving praise from both fans and judges such as acclaimed singer-songwriter Butch Walker and current editor of Spin Magazine Doug Brod. This prompted an offer to sign with budding indie label Original Signal Records (Ingrid Michaelson, Butch Walker), but after careful consideration Joseph declined to sign. “It wasn’t the right thing, the right time. I was just in the process of moving cross-country and I really wanted to keep my options open.”

A gifted composer, arranger, songwriter, performer and producer, Patrick Joseph even adds recording his own material to his list of tasks. “I never really wanted to be my own recording engineer or producer,” he muses. “It just kind of fell on me and now I’m stuck under it, it’s something I’ve always done though. I guess it just came out of necessity. Once you get the reigns of a certain degree of power it’s hard to get used to letting go though, manipulating the songs and not having to run ideas through another filter before they hit the tape. There’s only a certain amount of processing, a certain number of tasks that can travel through the human brain at any particular time at once and if you don’t delegate or organize those tasks then you’re due for some kind of a meltdown.” When asked about the idea of collaborating with a producer in the future he responded, “Oh absolutely yes, that’s the goal, I suppose - to find someone I really respect musically and can operate on the same page with. I look forward to the day when I can bounce ideas and create a chemistry with someone in the studio. Or having someone to hit ‘record’ would be a nice start, too.”

In November 2010, Joseph released his debut full-length album Antiques. "It's been a long time coming, but it feels great to get those songs off of my conscience and out in the open air breathing on their own instead of living off of digesting the gray matter in my own head," he explains. "I spent some good time mixing them, re-treating some old tracks and adding some new ones and I think it's a pretty great little record. Adam Ayan (Foo Fighters, Incubus, Rolling Stones) at Gateway Mastering mastered it up over there in Maine and did a phenominal job - it sounds superb."

In January 2011, Patrick Joseph was nominated for The Deli Magazine's "Top Emerging Artists of 2011," a fan-based voting poll that was held on their website, http://national.thedelimagazine.com. Joseph finished as the runner-up vote recepient for the city of Los Angeles.

2011 offered Joseph's Antiques multiple placements in TV and film, namely features on MTV, FuseTV On Demand, and select tracks from the album featured in the 2012 Sundance Film Festival submission The Boys of Abu Ghraib starring Sean Astin.

When he's not touring or recording, you can catch Patrick Joseph performing live around Southern California. Keep an eye out for upcoming tour dates as well.

Currently, Joseph now has his sights set on tracking his second full-length studio album entitled Moon King, release date TBA.

He is also working on a brand-new EP release of select cover songs entitled Stranger's Shoes with Lucas Martinez, release date TBA. Each track from Stranger's Shoes will have its very own YouTube video posted, including already-popular covers he's performed such as Radiohead's "Idioteque" and "Feeling Good."

On November 22nd, 2011, Joseph released an EP entitled Relics, an acoustic interpretation of select tracks from Antiques. The EP embodies the live acoustic sound he cultivated while performing at venues around Los Angeles in 2011.

Leigh Nash is perhaps best known as the pixie-like singer with the heavenly voice from Sixpence None the Richer, a CCM group that enjoyed considerable fame in 1999 with the single "Kiss Me." She had started the band at age 14 with schoolmate Matt Slocum.

Nearly half her life later, at age 27, Sixpence None the Richer split, albeit on good terms. Before the band called it quits, Nash had often considered working solo, if and when she would be band-less. Though the end of Sixpence left her a little distraught, Nash realized it was time to move on, and she and her husband moved from Nashville to Los Angeles.

Soon after, Nash gave birth to a son. She decided to return to her roots a little, which consisted of Christian and country music, though she remained in touch with her pop influences. Nash's original musical inspiration came from classic country heroines Loretta Lynn, Patsy Cline, and Tanya Tucker whose songs she used to learn on guitar long before the Sixpence days. With motherhood as an inspiration, she recorded Blue on Blue and moved back to Nashville to join Movement Nashville, a recently formed collective of musicians geared toward expelling the myth that Nashville's music scene consists only of country and Christian music. On November 15th 2011, Leigh Nash released Hymns & Sacred Songs, marking her rediscovery of the sacred songs that stirred her imagination long before she became a recording star.

Nash grew up singing in church, but it wasn’t what you might think. She wasn’t the golden-haired angel singing the solo in the Christmas pageant. She was the girl in the pew just beginning to discover her own voice.

That shy young girl from New Braunfels, Texas, would grow up to become the unforgettable Grammy-nominated voice behind such pop hits as “Kiss Me,” “There She Goes” and “Breathe Your Name” as lead vocalist for Sixpence None the Richer.

Nash’s professional successes notwithstanding, life has offered up its share of personal challenges in recent years: the joyful arrival of her son Henry, a painful divorce, and the death of her father. And in the midst of all of it, Leigh has discovered the reality of God’s grace and comfort firsthand. “Before all this, I always felt a little self-conscious singing in church, a little awkward trying to sing the melodies. I think a big part of me didn’t feel worthy to be a conduit for such sacred hymns and songs, but now, because of what I have been through, I see it differently. BIO: Amy McCann

Amy McCann is a musician with a broad range of musical interests from classical to folk to rock. She is a multi-instrumentalist singer- songwriter who draws inspiration from nature. Amy may be found walking pretty much any dirt path in Canada and anyone who knows her from her Youtube channel (amccann7) will see this in many of her videos.

Amy was trained as a classical violinist as a child, coming from a very musical family. As a teenager, she began to love bands like Led Zeppelin and switched to acoustic guitar and mandolin. She learned finger-picking blues from famous Toronto Folkie Mose Scarlet before playing in Northern California for several years. Amy then returned to classical taking a guitar performance degree at McGill University in Montreal, while raising 3 children. Amy now runs a small but devoted music studio and performs occasionally as a classical & folk-rock soloist, and with her folk ensemble Hazy Maidens with vocalist Julie McCann.

Although she collaborates frequently with wonderful musicians all over the planet, she is also known to record entire songs herself because she sometimes feels she just has to get the song out. This means all the instruments (guitar, violin, piano, drums) and vocals. Arguably, her greatest musical quality is her ability to emotionally ignite anything she plays.

Finally, Amy is an accomplished artist that specializes in watercolor/oils. Again, her themes tend to be nature-based and organic. Her art, which displays a love of nature’s mysteries and magic, has even attracted the attention of scientists who have commissioned her for specific paintings. She also studied stained-glass making while living in Montreal and designs her own patterns.

About: Jeff Paisley

Jeff Paisley fell in love with music when he was a young boy and joined choir in the 3rd grade. By the time he was 16, and with the influences of Paul McCartney, Duran Duran, Bryan Adams, and Def Leppard, he started down a path of teaching himself how to play keyboards and writing music.

Over the years Jeff had been a part of many touring choirs and bands which fueled the fires of love he had for music. But when Jeff got married, music took a back seat to family. He passed on an offer from a subsidiary of a major label when he was 22 but kept writing music through the years.

When he learned of the true mercy and love of his Savior Jesus Christ and His second coming Jeff’s life and music changed. He went on to Pastor for a few years… doing prophecy seminars and music around the US, Ukraine, and Russia as well as founding and hosting a radio program called The Awesome Light.

During those years Jeff had been told by his friends and family that he should send his music to Christian record companies, but he was focused on being a Pastor.

In 2008, he finally gave in and Jeff signed with Tate Music Group. During production of the album, Jeff had massive side effects from a medication that left him sick for nearly two years. Tate Music Group waited on him to heal and finish the tracks which he ended up producing and recording mostly by himself.

God has comforted, protected, and guided Jeff through the years. Jeff believes that God is a God of second chances… Jeff’s mission in life, and in his music, is to proclaim the true love, mercy, and soon second coming of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. In 2010 Jeff decided to leave Pastoral ministry and pursue a full time music ministry. .. .

"Forever Believe" was released in March of 2011. With little to no marketing Jeff left Tate Music Group late in 2011 and is currently looking to sign with another label and re-release "Forever Believe."

BIO: Portico Quartet

The Portico Quartet are a bunch of guys in their early twenties who play instrumental music. Formed six years ago from two sets of schoolfriends, they share a house in East London, make recordings, and play festivals and clubs. Yet what distinguishes them from dozens of other Hackney hopefuls is the way they sound – a fresh, unclichéd resynthesis and reinvention of music that’s both pleasingly familiar and thrillingly new, like World Music from the future. With largely acoustic resources – percussion, bass and wind instruments – they have conjured and refined a group signature that’s immediately recognisable. Thanks to the use of the hang, a tuned percussion instrument bought on impulse at a music festival, they have a sound that is instantly attractive, yet uncompromisingly individual, and it’s this, combined with the cheerful eloquence of their performances, that has brought Portico Quartet a long way in a short time.

The line-up of the band is Duncan Bellamy (drums), Milo Fitzpatrick (double bass), Nick Mulvey (hang and percussion) and Jack Wyllie (soprano, tenor saxophones and electronics). From a grassroots start in 2005, busking on the South Bank of London’s Thames, their reputation spread swiftly. They began to get paid bookings plus the odd festival, and they made a five-track CD to sell at gigs. In 2007 they signed a record deal to make a full length CD, Knee Deep In The North Sea (Babel/Vortex). This was a turning point: the album attracted attention from DJs, bloggers and critics of every stripe, and was nominated for the 2008 Mercury Music Prize alongside Rachel Unthank, The Last Shadow Puppets, Radiohead and Elbow – a win-win situation for credible newcomers like Unthank and Portico Quartet.

Formed by Snow Patrol’s Gary Lightbody as an outlet for his fascination with country music, Tired Pony began taking shape in May 2009. By October, the solo project had grown into a full-fledged supergroup featuring another Snow Patrol veteran, Iain Archer, his wife Miriam Kaufmann, producer/musician Jacknife Lee, Belle & Sebastian percussionist Richard Colburn, auxiliary R.E.M. member Scott McCaughey, and Troy Stewart. Peter Buck joined several months later, and Tired Pony traveled to Portland in early 2010 to record the a debut album. Featuring guest appearances by Zooey Deschanel, M. Perry, Georgia, USA (2009 – present)

Washed Out is Ernest Greene, a young guy from Perry, Georgia, USA who makes bedroom synthpop that sounds blurred and woozily evocative, like someone smeared Vaseline all over an early OMD demo tape, then stayed up all night trying to recreate what they heard.

There’s a sense of longing and distance in Greene’s somber, filtered vocals, but it’s what he does compositionally that makes Washed Out stand out. Backed by gently pulsing, Balearic-tinged disco, Greene’s voice takes on a new dimension. Reminiscent of groups like The Glass and Chromatics, Washed Out is the music to end your night with, when the city is quiet and you’ve got a long walk home ahead of you.

THE WAKING SLEEP

Soon after finishing her acclaimed 2008 album Apple Tree, Colorado-born, Nashville-based singer-songwriter Katie Herzig received a fateful phone call. "I sat down to paint one day—I hadn't painted in years—then I got a call asking me to write a song for the Sex and the City movie," she says. "So I put down my paintbrush and haven’t painted since!"

What she did instead, as one assignment led to another, was write music for numerous films and television shows, and in the process, find a surprising and exciting direction for her new album, The Waking Sleep, her first release on Downtown/Mercer Street Records. "I was trying new things," says Herzig, "getting outside of what I would normally do as an artist. It was really fun and invigorating to use samples and build tracks digitally. I loved creating like that, and it really allowed me more freedom, because I was doing something less personal, and creating for something else."

But there was also no doubt that at some point, this accomplished artist would return to the distinctive, heartfelt material that made her name. After initially fronting the Colorado-based band Newcomers Home, Herzig released her solo debut, Watch Them Fall, in 2004, followed by Weightless two years later. When she relocated to Nashville, she immediately started to catch the attention of her fellow artists and was invited to perform as part of the remarkable new talent showcased on the Hotel Café and Ten Out of Tenn tours.

As rewarding as the soundtrack work could be, there was another kind of work to be done. "I knew I'd have to get back to writing for me," she says. "I was kind of intimidated by it, but I knew a lot would come out. I do remember saying, though, I thought I might make a really mellow, stripped-down record."

It wouldn't have been a surprise for Herzig to go that direction. After all, her last release was Live in Studio: Acoustic Trio, a bare-bones 2009 re-imagining of some of her material. But there's another side of her musical interests that came to the fore instead.

"I just love bands, and I found myself making a record that felt like that. I was listening to lots of Coldplay, Phoenix, Vampire Weekend..." she says. Herzig and producer Cason Cooley were also especially taken with film composers Gustavo Santaolalla (Babel, Brokeback Mountain) and Mark Mothersbaugh who also influenced their thinking.

Herzig knew that she wanted to work with one producer and write a batch of songs that were specifically intended for a new album. Eventually, "The Waking Sleep" emerged as the project's initial composition. "It felt like the first personal song I'd written in a long time," she says. "That got the ball rolling, and felt like it might be the beginning of something."

"Wasting Time" followed soon after, written on a ukulele borrowed from one of Herzig's bandmates. As she and Cooley began to develop these songs, a new process and a new sound were surfacing. "I recorded a lot of these songs at my home studio and started to build tracks as I wrote them," she says. "It was very experimental and not rushed. Before I did all the film and tv stuff I would mostly just write songs on my guitar, now I was building tracks and writing songs within them."

The Waking Sleep was constructed over a full year of work, as Herzig continued to tour on her own and open for Brandi Carlile across the US. "I recorded whenever I was home, and each time it felt like it was a different season of the record," she says. Songs like "Make A Noise" and "Midnight Serenade" represented uncharted territory for Herzig, with skittery rhythms and multiple movements. By combining digitally programmed sounds with organic instruments, she was finding a fresh musical identity.

The song "Way To The Future" came suddenly, at the end of a session, when Cooley played Herzig a drum loop he wasn't sure what to do with. "I sat down and started playing this string sample against it," she says. "I was about to leave, but I stayed and we just wrote the song- it was really fast and fluky."

Herzig knew that these songs would present a new kind of challenge for her on stage, since she'll follow up the album's release with a headlining tour, as well as another run on the Ten Out of Tenn tour. Speaking a few days after her first live performance of five songs from The Waking Sleep, she says that "it felt like I was playing my first show—a whole different energy, like we were a different band."

In addition to the changes that The Waking Sleep represent in her sound, Herzig also found that the lyrics of her new songs were moving into new areas. "These songs are less relationship-driven," she says. "Of course, there's still some of that but the key songs—"The Waking Sleep," "Make a Noise," "Way to the Future," "Free My Mind"—all raise bigger questions about things going on in the world. Like a lot of people, I've felt constantly overwhelmed by the state of the world, and finding myself asking how it will work out and how we can help solve things."

With The Waking Sleep, Katie Herzig displays maturity and creative fearlessness that extend far beyond her previous work. She knew the risks involved, and knew that breakthroughs only come from having the confidence to believe in your instincts. "I was afraid that all I wanted to write about was global warming and the economy," she says, "and I don't really know how to write about those things. But I just needed to raise questions. I see all these things happening around me, what can I do about them?

"On some songs, I don't even know what I'm writing about," Herzig concludes. "But it feels like exactly what I need to say."

Bob Crawford, born in the Bronx, NY, is one of those rare people who combines musicality, scholarship, and business acumen into one seamless individual. After graduating from the University of Virginia in 1971 (Phi Beta Kappa/Magna cum laude) Bob embarked on his musical career full time. From being the Musical Director, Guitarist, and Vocalist for the National Company of Paul Sills' "Story Theatre"(1972-3) to the publishing of his music theory book "Symmetric Cycles" (Foreward by Mick Taylor-Rolling Sones/John Mayall) by RMCO MUSIC/Charles Colin Publications, Bob has been actively involved in songwriting, arranging, producing, and studio work as a guitarist and vocalist for the past 30 years.

In 1975, Bob founded Josandra Rehearsal Studios in NYC which became the home of such celebrated musicians as Pat Martino, Larry Harlow, Sonny Rollins, Horace Silver, Mongo Santamaria, Slide Hampton, Sam Jones, Tom Harrell, Kevin Eubanks, Larry Coryell, John Abercrombie, Brand X, Tom Rush, John Hammond, Aztec 2 Step, Jocelyn Brown, Meat Loaf, Loretta Devine, and Roz Ryan among many others.

In 1986 he acted as President of Lions' Den Recording in NYC until 1990 when he formed RMCO MUSIC, his full-service production, recording, publishing, and consulting company. Still active today RMCO MUSIC boasts such varied clients as Larry Harlow, Mick Taylor, Jocelyn Brown, Maxine Brown, Ron Richardson, Vickilyn Reynolds, Carl Hall, Beverly Crosby, and Vondie Curtis-Hall.

In 1991, Larry Harlow (2008 Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award Winner and Latin Music Hall of Fame Member) recorded "My Time Is Now"("Mi Tiempo Llego") on the album of the same name, co-written by Bob Crawford and A. Dennis (Doc) Williams of the O'Jays released on Cache/Fania Records.

In 2006, Maxine Brown (R&B Hall of Fame Member and Tony Award Winner) recorded anther of Bob's compositions "I Want To Be Loved" released on "From The Heart" (Mee Max Music, Inc.) BIO: Melissa James

Melissa James may be an unfamiliar name to some, but that is set to change. A late joiner to the music scene, it was while studying Media Studies at Sussex University in Brighton that she first dipped her toe into the singing pool. Her weekly appearance at the on-campus Park Village Bar was where her thirst for performance and jazz was created.

In between lectures and seminars, she'd listen intently to recordings by Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald and Nina Simone, mentally taking notes then reliving what she'd learned in her slot at the jazz jam on a Sunday night. Soon she was performing in small Brighton venues which further increased her thirst for singing and performance.

Fast-forward fourteen years and since her days in Brighton, in addition to frequenting London's Parisien-themed venue, Le Quecumbar, where she plays with guitarist Andy Robinson, Melissa has also worked with an eye-brow raising list of names on the jazz circuit in London. Femi Temowo, Tony Kofi and Mike Outram are just some of the musicians that stand-out among the many. But it was two years ago, upon meeting SW London-based pianist and composer, Ross Lorraine, that Melissa's ambitions took another direction.

The James-Lorraine collaboration has built-up a steady stream of songs incorporating her influences from the days she spent listening to Billie and Ella as well as many of artists of now, from Lizz Wright and Cassandra Wilson to other singer-songwriters such as Joni Mitchell, Eric Bibb and Ray Lamontagne. Her style, while tipping a hat towards jazz, also has the rawness of blues and hints of folk. "It's hard to pin me down," she says with a smile, "I like music and I listen to all kinds so naturally this is reflected in my own writing."

Soon she will have added another notch to her belt when she records her first CD. Still very much focused on fine-tuning her material, she has plans to record her debut album later this year. "This is an exciting time," she beams, "I'm putting together a band, we're working through the songs and I gig them, in a small acoustic settings, as often as I can just so I can work-out what works and what doesn't. When we go into the studio, we'll record it live so I want the songs to have lived a little so that their individual stories can really come through on the record." There are big times ahead for Melissa James so while her name may not be very familiar to you now, it won't be long before it will be.

BIO: Throwing Gravity

Throwing Gravity just finished their first album. For the third time. It is often said that "the third time is a charm", and for Throwing Gravity, that is precisely the expectation.

In the fall of 2009, under their original name, The Rust, the band hit the road in promotion of their debut record - the first version that is - entitled "Anticipation". Touring the House of Blues circuit in support of Secondhand Serenade & Parachute, the group traveled across the entirety of the continental U.S. and a portion of Canada, winning over fans night after night with rock and roll anthems and the live show to back them up. Routing the group to territory previously unknown, the tour ultimately landed the quintet in Los Angeles, and as fate would have it, right into the lap of industry legend Jason Flom, credited with discovering Collective Soul, Stone Temple Pilots, Matchbox Twenty and Kid Rock, in addition to a host of other highly successful acts.

After viewing the band's showcase at the world-famous Viper Room, Flom signed the band to his newly-reformed Lava Records, doing business as a subsidiary of Universal Republic. All the hard work it seemed, had finally paid off - Throwing Gravity (to be) had finally landed the coveted "major label deal".

Upon signing their contract with Lava/Universal in December 2009 and officially changing their name from The Rust to Throwing Gravity, the band was pushed right into the studio on January 1st, 2010 to begin the recording process for what would become "Wake Up", the group's (official) debut release. Featuring production and mixing from the likes of Chris Lord-Alge (Shinedown, Daughtry, Paramore), Ryan Williams (30 Seconds to Mars, 3 Doors Down, Outkast), Josh Abraham (Staind, Velvet Revolver, Limp Bizkit) and Jon King (Augustana, Future Leaders of the World, 3 Pill Morning), "Wake Up" included several new songs in addition to a collection of re-recorded songs from "Anticipation", the bands original first record.

"Wake Up" was completed in the spring of 2010, and with masters in hand and multiplatinum team in place - production, mixing, legal, booking, management and label - the stage was set for what the members of Throwing Gravity planned to be the biggest year of their lives. But plans don't always work out. For the better part of eight months, Throwing Gravity sat at home in Nashville, TN and waited. And waited. And waited. As time slowly dragged on, filled with unreturned phone calls, album release dates getting pushed back and tours falling through, it became increasingly clear that "the dream" was falling apart. And in late 2010, the dreaded phone call that everyone feared was on its way, finally came - Throwing Gravity was released from their contract with Lava/Universal Republic Records. And to make matters worse, their record - a product of countless hours of hard work, blood, sweat and tears, and lined with a slew of heavy-hitting industry names - was shelved, never to see the light of day.

By the end of 2010, the year that was so promising a mere 12 months earlier, Throwing Gravity was left with nothing. No record. No album. No money. A roller coaster ride leading straight back to square one.

After the inevitable period of mourning finally passed, Throwing Gravity decided to pick themselves up, dust themselves off and get back in the studio with friend and producer Jon King to record their first album yet again - for the third time. Armed with only the best songs from "Wake Up" and comprised predominately of new material, Throwing Gravity's official debut record, "It's Not the End", is an audible masterpiece. Fueled by hard-hitting drums and burning guitar riffs on songs like "Circles" and "Stop", layered with undeniable melodies and powerful lyrical content a la "Best Time" and "Given Up on Giving Up on You" and featuring the songs that have stood the test of time - "Wake Up", "Missing You" and "Here We Go Again" - "It's Not the End" is sure keep you listening from start to finish.

La Resistance is the brainchild of Greg Summerlin, who after releasing several solo albums on Superphonic Records formed the new Birmingham, Alabama band with three friends that have played with him over the past several years. The band's debut album, "Philosophy", was released on Superphonic Records in February and has received an enthusiastic response from both fans and press alike.

"Philosophy" recalls various musical influences from the last three decades and reflects the band's views on contemporary life in the US today.

Greg is joined by Wil Drake on drums, Jake Blount on bass and Erin Tumlin on keys and vocals. Greg's previous three albums received much critical approval and had songs that appeared in numerous TV shows and movies, including network placements on ABC and NBC.

Works Progress Administration takes its name from FDR’s 1939 New Deal initiative, which put millions to work making buildings, bridges, theater, art and music. The original WPA was rooted in the values of community and creativity, and helped to keep the fire of human dignity burning through the darkest years of the Great Imposters.

WPA was born out of the musical community surrounding the legendary LA club, Largo. The members of the band had known and admired each other for years, and found themselves with a strong batch of unrecorded songs, a little down time, and a collective feeling that it might be a good idea to put something on tape.

After a chance meeting between Sean and Grammy winning recording engineer Jim Scott, the group found themselves in Scott’s studio, Plyrz, recording 17 songs live in five days. With an album mixed and mastered, the band hadn’t even chosen a name or secured management. In an era where the expectation is that a group of this experience and caliber would be something conceived by business executives, WPA came out of an authentic and vibrant musical community, and the album is a beautiful reflection of its origins.

The instant classic “Always Have My Love”, penned and sung by Glen Phillips, starts the album with a powerful dose of dual fiddles, pedal steel and piano, revealing the band’s palette from the first bar. The album continues with five more Phillips songs, plaintive and introspective tunes from Sean Watkins (“Not Sure”, “Paralyzed” and “You’re Already Gone”), commanding vocals performed by Luke Bulla on “Who’s Gonna Cry For You” and “Remember Well”, and the haunting voice of Sara Watkins on Benmont Tench’s “The Price” and the Ray Davies classic “I Go To Sleep”. Despite having four lead singers and a high level of instrumental prowess the band keeps its focus in service to the song, and creates a sound that is both timeless and unique.

Now, with a wonderful record reminiscent of “more than the sum of its parts” groups such as Fleetwood Mac, The Band, and CSNY, the founding members of WPA (Glen, Luke, and Sean) are rallying the troops for a cross-country excursion. Given that the heart of this band is found in its collective spirit, if one of the Executive Board is required at his “day job”, it’s looked at as an opportunity, not a problem. Since childhood she could always be found singing, playing the piano and dancing around the house making up little songs & routines with her brothers. She plays piano, guitar & laptop to create her own music, which takes on several different forms. The Surya Sound is a live and recorded meditative experience that feature chants and prayers in both Sanskrit and Tibetan. She has studied the Yoga of Voice with Sheinagh Saraswati Anderson and Indian Classical Music with Neeraja Aptikar & Aparna Gurav in Pune, India. My name is Tory and I am a independent singer/songwriter/musician based in the Austin and Houston areas. I write my own original music in the pop blues rock vein. I also am a big music fan and play a ton of covers of other artists including everything from Tom Petty to Reckless Kelly to Little Wayne. BIO: Bipolar Rats

Our genre varies! We like to paint ourselves with the Alternative brush as our common influences stem from the punk/indie/rock genres. We have a combination of hard hitting, gut wrenching punk tracks mixed in with the more introspective acoustic and melodic tracks.

'BiPoLar Rats?' was formed in Cape Town on the 15 December 2009. Andrew and Allan after an impromptu jam session, if you could call it that given our elementary knowledge of the guitar, got together to learn to play, write and record our brand of music. Candice was hauled in (kicking, biting and scratching) to perform bass duties.

9 months later, what seemed like a million hours of practicing scales and chords, and lots of heated discussions about song choice, we recorded 'fateful coincidence'. Produced on a very tight budget and 5 sunday afternoons in a back room, 'fateful coincidence' is the culmination of the union.

Allan has spent most of 2011 in the UK so logistically getting the band together has not happened. We have been writing a host of new songs and are looking to release them in December 2011. This will coincide with us moving from the garage to the stage.

It’s difficult to say where Night Beds begins, but maybe it’s here: August 2006, Colorado Springs, Matt Wilcox invites Winston Yellen to his apartment to record. Or it could be a little later, when one is studying engineering in Nashville, and the other remains behind, an unhappy captive of secondary education: “We were lonely people. We’d call each other and talk about records.” Or any number of moments, really, along a series of migrations, but probably here: the summer of 2008, back in Colorado Springs, when they write the first Night Beds song. You Were Afraid.

“God knows that we try to do the best we can”

After that there is a lot of time spent in basements, a lot of alcohol, a lot of irreverent tuning, but not all that much need for talk. Most things are shared, understood: in thin mountain air, or in a waterlogged summer atmosphere, there can be a sense that breathing is effortful, that sleep is easy but not restful. The songs that come out of those first few years, collected on three EPs (night beds, every fire; every joy, and hide from it), are an exercise in catharsis. They’re deeply ringing things, washed in whiskey. The sound is like something emergent from a tunnel. It may be the red eye of a cigarette in the dark, or it may be dawn peeking out.

“Somewhere we might find softer light”

“We didn’t think. It just was always what felt good.” So the songs come together over acoustic guitars, over the first skeletal melodies, and then they grow. Yellen’s voice takes on a pure kind of thirst when wrapped in the sonic landscapes he and Wilcox devise. It’s searching. It’s taken several years to map everything out, but after a hiatus spent driving the deserts and prairies and coastal roads of the United States, sleeping in a hatchback or on friendly couches – after a long time spent alone – Night Beds has found a home in Nashville, with southstead records. Soon it will see the release of Country Sleep, a full-length album in the spirit of the vagabond, in the winding path to a place of good rest

Nokio the N-TITY is a producer, songwriter, singer, and rapper. Hailing from Baltimore, Maryland, Nokio is best known as one of the influential members of the multi-platinum R&B group Dru Hill where he served as in-house producer and songwriter for the quartet.

The Ruse have been known to deliver songs that will crawl into your head and take hold of your heart. Love Sex Confusion, the band’s fourth studio album of new songs, brings a blend of guitar-laden tracks and commanding drum and bass lines that generate the feeling of a live performance.

“We wanted to make the songs on the album much more ‘danceable’ than we did on previous albums,” guitarist Jim Bilus says. “Overall, we wanted to make a rock and roll album that would really shine when we played it live. Singer and multi-instrumentalist Scott Perrie and guitar/banjo player Jeremy Breaks have been perfecting their collaborative craft since they met at an open jam in Vancouver. Both came from musical backgrounds, Perrie through the theatre and his grandfathers ‘61 Gibson J45, and Breaks through growing up in his father’s music store in Prince George. The duo’s musical vision came together with their acclaimed 2009 debut The Leap, and in 2010 they recorded an EP, entitled Meet You On The Other Side with the popular upbeat track “Like Penguins Do”. These days Redgy Blackout are producing their best material yet, bringing a united focus and dedication to the music they create, and collaborating with top notch musicians.

The new, Redgy Blackout EP is a collection of 6 original songs of rock your pants off (“Bottom Of The Sea”), pure pop folk (“100 Cigarettes”) and heartfelt songwriting (“Once Knew You”). It’s a testament to the musicianship of the members of Redgy Blackout and their devotion to the craft; it displays a comfort and maturity with songwriting and composition with a sense these guys really like to have fun. The Redgy Blackout EP is their third recording, released officially July 15, 2011, and was produced by Elisa Pangsaeng, mixed by Tom Dobrzanski (Said The Whale, The Zolas) and recorded at Vertical and Blue Wave Studios in Vancouver. BISCUITS – I guess this current incarnation of Fink all started when Guy said he was up for playing bass on a few tracks (‘So Long’ on Biscuits For Breakfast being the first I think) and Tim, over beers at a pub in Hampstead, was persuaded to play drums on a few (his first being probably the title track ‘Biscuits’). Then Ninja Tune released Biscuits in 2006, and the track ‘Pretty Little Thing’ kinda struck a chord out there for some reason. So we toured, and toured and toured, learning and playing, playing and learning… We packed a tent at Lowlands festival in Holland, we sold out La Maroquinerie in Paris and Joe’s Pub in New York City, we played from the USA to Poland and everywhere in-between.

DISTANCE – When we were through learning what a soundcheck was, we wrote Distance And Time in 2007. It has some really solid tracks we think: ‘Blueberry Pancakes’, ‘If Only’ (which led to me working with John Legend), and particularly ‘This Is The Thing’, which continues to give us love not only as a decent song but also as a sync machine… Timmy took a break to pursue real life for a moment, so we toured quite a lot of Distance with Adrian the Canadrian (seen rocking out in the video section at the Haldern festival in Germany). We kinda turned to Europe big time as the UK was ignoring us a little… Radio 1 was great, but the press didn’t want to know… So we toured Europe, and loved it, so we toured it again… supporting Camille and Massive Attack, playing huge amphitheatres and everywhere from LA to Cape Town, the Albert Hall to Carnegie Hall… it was awesome….

REVOLUTION – We stopped touring Distance and went straight into the studio. Well, I say studio, but we wanted to take it somewhere else… somewhere maybe more intimate… so we converted my apartment into a recording studio-cum-storage ground, and after several visits and threats of fines from Brighton Council we delivered Sort Of Revolution in 2009, the tricky third set. We loved dub and hadn’t really represented that on previous outings so we nailed ‘Sort Of Revolution’ and ‘Q&A’ – the former gaining us our first KCRW session in LA, the second our first BBC Maida Vale session for Gilles Peterson (perhaps the last DJ on Radio 1 we expected to like our stuff). This record saw us really start to play bigger, and after all the TV stuff the fame game was beginning to kick in, which was and still is a little weird… We really did tour the shit our of this album, including a mind-bending China tour, finishing up in Australia with one of our fave gigs ever I think, at The Corner Hotel in Melbourne….

PERFECT DARKNESS – So we took a little hiatus: a bit of writing time, put our lives back together a little bit… During all of the above Timmy wrote a few books (available now on Random House: they’re about bands… lots of famous musos from the 90’s love ‘em…. if you even know what a ‘neddy’ is you’ll love ‘em too). We recorded a couple of Sideshow albums for Aus Music, and I wrote a load of songs for other people. We really needed a few months off… we all got fat and lazy and it was great…. then we travelled to Los Angeles in November 2010 for a blitzkrieg recording session in Steakhouse studios with Billy Bush. We had 8 tracks written and roughly planned out, plus two to do on the ground once there… y’know, kinda soak up the atmosphere as well as the Mexican junk food… We nailed the whole record from start to finish in 16 days – a feat that I think surprised the producer as much as us… we wanted to nail some hardcore blues (‘Wheels’) and some big tracks (‘Fear Is Like Fire’) as well as a stringy epic (‘Perfect Darkness’). We’re pretty amped about the whole album… It comes out in June 2011 (September in the US)… See you there, back out on the road… new set, new songs, loving it….

BIO: Simon Fagon

An American sound with elements of Gospel, folk and acoustic rock, with comparisons to Ryan Adams, Ray Lamontagne and Paolo Nuttini; The truth is I grew up on a diet of Credence, Van Morrison, Miles Davis, Lizzy, Pink Floyd, and some Stevie for good measure. However, my influences stretch well beyond these icons.

My love for music started when I was very young, joining my local choir, followed by the local brass band and then on to school and Uni where I studied both Music and Trumpet. I also got to play with Irish Youth Orchestra of Ireland for a few years.

After college I came very close to joining the army brass band but failed to show up to the drug test! I know what you're thinking, but the actual fact is, I found the whole thing very formal and regimented. I wasn't looking for a pension job, but something more adventurous, where I could take my own risks and be in control.

I had been singing and playing guitar with a number of bands since I was 13 so the natural progression was to put my hand to writing my own music. In the last few years I have developed both as a songwriter and performer. For the first time ever, I can say with hand on heart, that I feel truly happy with the sound that's emerging. This is helped by a great backing band, who really get the music and make rehearsals and gigging seem effortless. I've had the pleasure of opening for the likes of Lionel Richie, Smokey Robbinson, Laura Izibor and more recently Ocean Colour Scene. In the last 18 months I've toured heavily throughout Ireland and the UK and even ventured as far as US, Canada and Egypt where the response was overwhelming.

I released a 4 track EP in March '09 called 'Hired and Fired' featuring brass and woodwind. As I started touring the EP my sound naturally moved away from the brass heavy arrangements and towards a more acoustic rock sound. Much of the new songs I was writing, were more acoustic based and didn't benefit from adding brass or woodwind.Â It was also during this period that I formed a permanent band. Up until know I had called in friends and session players to perform with me.

Having a regular band allowed the songs to develop naturally from gig to gig and by the time we entered the studio to record the album the overall sound was there, if a few songs were still unwritten!

The album 'Outside Looking In' was released in June this year in Ireland and online and is available to buy, in those places where you go to buy music. The album includes "Damn Honey", "Memphis" and "Love Don't Work", which have all just been shortlisted for this years International Songwriting Competition and last years winner of the Performance category "Never Really Cried"

Sydney's The Preachers are fast becoming one of BobbySix.com's favourite up-and-coming bands. After almost a year together, an EP and some tentative interest from labels that weren't quite their cup of tea, they've decided to spend the next six months recording and releasing demos.

It's entitled The 66 Project and, like all good ideas, it's a pretty straightforward one. They plan to record and release as many high-quality demos (at least one a month) over the next six months, make everything free, and document the process.

The 66 Project officially begins in December but, in the meantime, the ever-generous bunch are kicking off by giving away their rather fine debut EP for free. They’re also releasing two offcuts from the EP, Young and Fictional Lover as free downloads.

Considering this is a band that are all about the songs rather than sticking to a genre or capturing a specific sound, their upcoming demo releases are sure to be pretty diverse, from acoustic folk and dark country to full-blown dirty-as-hell rock 'n' roll. So keep an eye on their 66 Project blog. After all, you can't ask for more than constant flow of high-quality, free music over the next few months.

Our music is inspired by space, travel (...) by listening to our music, we want people to be carried away to an imaginary place where everything's controlled through the natural equilibrium of the universe

In 2006, some friends got together to have fun doing what they liked doing most: making music. Rapidly, they started writing their own songs and soon realized they were ready to take their music to the next level. Influenced by a wide range of bands like Sigur Ros, Depeche Mode, Dead Can Dance; to U2, Pink Floyd and Radiohead, they decided to call themselves "Utter" and started working on their first album.. The word «utter», meaning "total, complete, infinite and extreme", embodies their aspiration to deliver an incomparable music experience to their fans through original songs and unique sounds.

In 2007, two of Utter's songs were quickly playlisted on "Radio Comercial", one of Portugal's biggest Stations. In 2008, Utter had already self-produced their first album entitled "Utter", distributed nationally by Compact Records. Their first album gained momentum throughout the country, which got them an invite to the radio station "Radar FM" in Lisbon, to present their newly released album, which by then was also available in stores like FNAC. Utter then embarked on their first National Tour.

In June 2009, Giliano, Zezén, Humberto, André and João started the production of their second album, which was completed in april of 2010. The album was mixed at the QM Studioaudio in Vila Nova de Gaia (Portugal) by the well known Portuguese musician and producer João Ferraz, On November 18th 2010 Utter decided to release a single off the Album while talks with Labels and plans for the future took shape. "Into the Light" was released through AWAL (artists without a label) and the single went straight to radio playlists including National Radio Antena 3 and many others.

Recently Utter released a free download entitled "first trip" which was released exclusively on the website of Antena 3 as well as exclusives on Supajam in the UK and on websites in America and other countries: Plans for the Album release are being discussed as the band continue to look at interested labels. . It may come as a surprise to hear the foot-stomping strains of Appalachian bluegrass channeled through a rock band here in Los Angeles, but heartache, loss and regret have always been the cornerstones of great music and this city has its share. In a town better known for porn stars and face lifts, anything as authentic and heartfelt as Rose's Pawn Shop, is a pleasant surprise.

Singer-songwriter Paul Givant grew up on the disparate array of popular musical styles any late 20th century kid did. And in that mishmash of rock, punk, country, pop, rap, and all the rest, it was American Folk and Bluegrass music that rooted deepest in Paul, transforming him and his songs. Having played in various rock bands since early high school, in 2004 Paul decided it was time to take his growing batch of old style/new school folk songs, and build them into something greater, more ferocious. The songs were there, volatile, almost flammable, but if they were to attain their potential greatness, he was going to need help.

As so many fortuned events unfold, it was through a series of chance meetings, twists of fate, and Craig's List, that Paul met kindred spirits in Sebastian St. John, Derek O'Brien, Bill Clark, Derek Swenson, and John Kraus. And in 2005 they began building the music and the band that would soon be known as Rose's Pawn Shop. This group of young musicians combined in their collective musical melting pot the old style American sounds of Woody Guthrie, Bill Monroe, and Hank Williams, the high energy punk of The Ramones, and The Pogues, and the melodic songwriting sensibilities of Elliott Smith and The Beatles. They were creating something musically unique and yet imbued with a familiarity and accessibility.

The final ingredient was added one fateful day when Paul's scorned ex-girlfriend/former band mate in an act of revenge stole the band's instruments and gear and took them down to the local pawn shop. Priceless. Rose's Pawn Shop was born... The match was lit.

In spring of 2006 after months of playing live and breaking ground around Los Angeles, the band recorded and released their debut album "The Arsonist". The album quickly began receiving critical praise from print and online publications as varied as "About.com", "The Daily News", "Miles of Music", and "Music Connection". A month after its release, Rose's Pawn Shop showcased and won the grand prize in Billboard Magazine and Discmaker's: Independent Music World Series. And in the summer of that year, the members of Rose's Pawn Shop dared to quit their day jobs and hit the road, and what had started as a slow and steady burn, began spreading like wildfire.

They have been touring the United States nearly non-stop ever since. On any given day you might find Rose's Pawn Shop playing the Georgia Theatre in Athens, busking the streets of Jackson Square in New Orleans, opening for Jack White and The Raconteurs at the Henry Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles, ripping the walls off the club in their month long residency at the Parkside Lounge in New York City, or hitting the main stage of Floydfest in Virginia. On any given day they're out there, growing their music, igniting their passion, and converting an ever increasing congregation of loyal fans.

In early 2010, Rose's Pawn Shop entered the studio with renowned producer Ethan Allen (Patty Griffin, Better Than Ezra, Counting Crows, Luscious Jackson, The 88, Gram Rabbit) to record the second album, "Dancing On the Gallows." In recording the new record, Rose's Pawn Shop found themselves rising to new level song craft and sound experimentation, while retaining the same fiery intensity and excitement of their early material. The highly anticipated album is slated for an early August 2010 release.

What do they sound like, you ask?

With an arsenal of banjos, guitars, mandolin, fiddle, pedal steel, upright bass, and thundering drums, their sound is a wholesome mishmash of creek mud, rusty nails and your mom's cookin'. It's sincere, straight-forward and sexy as fuck, effortlessly combining such disparate musical styles as rock, country, bluegrass, and punk to create an incomprehensibly smooth and accessible sound for true believers and skeptics alike.

With wisdom beyond their years, they fearlessly confront traditional country music themes of loss, lamentation, and redemption, while throwing in some drinking-songs for good measure. Sure, they're borrowing pages from the books of Hank Williams, Bill Monroe, and Johnny Cash, but Rose's Pawn Shop takes those pages, tears them up and sets them on fire with breakneck speed, bluegrass instrumentation, 3- and 4- part vocal harmonies and lyrics that'll break your heart.

Whether it's the dreamy snake-charm-thump of "Lone Rider," the wistful whisky-soaked wisdom of "Down The Line," the honky-tonk ruckus of "Funeral Pyre," or the Gypsy-infused mandolin twang of "Reckoning," Rose's Pawn Shop will hook you. Like catfish from the creek, they'll reel you in. And they won't let you go.

And you'll be glad they did.

Because something happens when you hear these songs. No matter how low you've sunk, something in the music finds you. It picks you up and carries you home.

BIO: The Heavy

In Noid, a tiny hamlet situated to the south west of Bath, some of the most dangerous and ill sounding beats and riffs are being created by four wolf like personalities.

The Heavy started out ripping and chopping beats from the likes of Bo Diddley, Little Walter and The Parliaments and fusing them with their now patented brand of high grade dirt. Guitar riffs that intoxicate, bass lines that reverberate around your head like a King Jammy dream and vocals that will challenge any of the genres they decide to take on.

The Heavy continually cross genres as they as a unit are proud to be completely musically schizophrenic. From country to rhythm and blues, garage punk to rock and roll, Studio one to the slums of shaolin, you'll find that The Heavy are indeed like a pack of chemists with the way that genres get cooked up, blended, stirred and then mixed, to create their own unique style of rock and roll.

The album Great Vengeance and Furious Fire released on Counter Records in late 2007 generated a great deal of interest with songs like That kind of man, Girl, Set me free, Coleen and Dignity, firmly laying foundations for the house of dirt that they are building at present. There is no other band that sounds as raw as The Sonics while holding soul in a headlock and frequently wrestling rock to the ground with the weight of Mr 808 as tag team partner. We're just two dudes who really enjoy playing acoustic music together.
